Eating nuts prolongs life and protects heart health

Eating a small handful of nuts daily can significantly improve health. Extensive research shows that people who eat nuts regularly live longer on average than those who do not. This involves about 28 grams of nuts a day, comparable to the size of a golf ball.

Nuts contain healthy fats, plant-based proteins, fibre and important minerals such as magnesium and potassium. They are also packed with antioxidants that protect cells against harmful processes that can accelerate ageing and disease. The heart in particular benefits from nuts; the risk of cardiovascular disease falls significantly with regular consumption.

Alongside a lower chance of heart problems, studies show that nuts also reduce the risk of certain forms of cancer. This effect is due to the combination of anti-inflammatory substances and dietary fibre that promote cell health and help the body combat oxidative stress.

Many people are hesitant because nuts are high in calories, but scientific research shows that this does not lead to weight gain. Nuts provide a feeling of fullness and ensure that we are less likely to overeat. As a result, they fit well into a healthy diet.

Including nuts in your daily diet is a simple and enjoyable way to stay healthy for a long time. This small tweak can make a big difference as you age.
