Research shows that omega-3 fatty acids can have a positive effect on kidney function, especially in older adults. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish oil, among other things, and are known for their beneficial effects on the heart and blood vessels. New research shows that they can also slow down the ageing process in kidney cells and thus inhibit kidney diseases.
As we age, kidneys often lose their ability to filter properly. This is partly due to the ageing of kidney cells and the formation of scar tissue. The research group gave older mice omega-3 fatty acids, which led to fewer signs of ageing and scarring in the kidneys. As a result, the kidneys continued to function better, comparable to those of younger animals.
The researchers also discovered that omega-3 fatty acids work via a special protein in kidney cells called FFAR4. This protein is important for protecting kidney cells against damage and ageing. In older people and people with kidney problems, the amount of this protein is often lower than normal. The action of omega-3 appears to stimulate the protein, thereby improving kidney health.
Although this research was conducted in mice, it offers new insights into how diet can contribute to better kidney health during aging. For people who want to age healthily, it is good to know that omega-3 fatty acids may offer protection against kidney problems.
