New research shows that people who live close to the sea live longer on average than people in other areas. The study looked at data from more than 66,000 residential areas in the United States. What stood out is that the life expectancy of coastal residents is at least a year higher than the national average.
Interestingly enough, living near rivers or lakes in cities does not appear to offer any health benefits. In fact, life expectancy in those areas is often lower. This makes the influence of the immediate natural environment on our health clearer. The oceanic climate and fresh sea air can contribute to a better quality of life.
The sea may also have a calming effect, reducing stress. Less stress and a healthy living environment are important factors that promote healthy ageing. In addition, the sea often encourages an active lifestyle involving walking and outdoor exercise.
These findings highlight that where we live can influence our health and lifespan. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to a living environment that encourages physical activity and relaxation.
