Sufficient sleep prolongs life and improves health

Sleep is an important key to a long and healthy life. Research shows that the quantity and quality of sleep have an impact on ageing and the prevention of disease. People who consistently get too little or indeed too much sleep are at a greater risk of heart problems, diabetes and other health complaints.

Our biological clock is set to a day-night rhythm of approximately 24 hours, in which sleep and alertness have a fixed place. Anyone who regularly goes to bed and gets up at the same time supports the body and mind. That is important for strengthening the immune system and ensuring the heart and brain function properly.

During deep sleep, the body repairs itself. The brain cleanses itself using a special system that clears away harmful waste products. This process helps to counteract memory loss and diseases such as Alzheimer's. Disturbed or irregular sleep can hinder this recovery and thereby increase the risk of health problems.

Research also shows that poor sleep can accelerate the ageing process in cells. By sleeping well, these signs of ageing can be slowed down, which contributes to a better quality of life in old age. Sleep is therefore a simple, cost-free means of supporting health.

Improving good sleep is therefore a smart and achievable way to age healthily and remain vital for longer.
