Optimal sleep duration important for healthy ageing

New research shows that both too little and too much sleep can affect the body's ageing process. Scientists looked at how sleep affects the biological clock of seventeen organ systems, such as the heart, lungs and immune system. They discovered that less than six hours of sleep per night, as well as more than eight hours, accelerates the ageing process.

The study analysed data from over 500,000 people and cited a sleep duration of approximately 6.4 to 7.8 hours as the best for health. Within this range, the biological ageing of organs appears to progress the most slowly. That means sleeping within this ‘lifespan window’ can contribute to a healthier and longer life.

Sleep plays a crucial role in the body's recovery and functioning. When sleep duration deviates from this optimal range, organs can be placed under additional strain, which may increase the risk of health problems. This research emphasises that sleep is an important lifestyle factor that people can adjust themselves in order to age healthily.

Therefore, for older adults or those approaching that stage of life, it is wise to pay attention to getting a good and regular night's sleep. This can help to slow down the ageing process and support the health of the entire body.
