New insights on staying active at work for longer

On 17 and 18 February, the Century Summit 2026 took place, a conference focused on the theme of longer lives and work. This event was held on the Stanford campus and could be followed online for free. The central topic was how we can help people to continue doing valuable work at a later age.

During the meeting, questions took centre stage such as: how do we ensure people are not held back by their age? How can education and training be adapted to careers that last for decades? It was also discussed what the role of employers, governments and communities is in supporting a fair and sustainable working environment.

These developments fit with the changes in our society, where people live longer and healthier lives on average. As a result, we work to an older age more often, which requires new skills and adaptations. It is important that we respond to this with appropriate opportunities and support.

Healthy ageing also means that work can continue to play a meaningful role. By investing in learning and connection in the workplace, older people can remain productive and engaged. This benefits not only themselves, but also society as a whole.

These discussions are valuable because they show how we can approach ageing and work with a positive outlook. This makes it possible to remain active with pleasure and fulfilment, even after your forties or fifties.
