New facility focuses on female ageing research

The Buck Institute in California has established a unique research facility focusing on the relationship between female reproductive biology and ageing. This so-called Reproductive Biology Hub supports scientists who want to understand more about how the female reproductive system changes as women grow older. The aim is to stimulate and improve research into ovarian ageing and women's hormonal balance.

Ageing researchers often have little knowledge of reproductive biology, and the reverse is equally true. The new hub helps to bridge this gap by providing expertise, equipment and training. This enables researchers to ask better questions and gain new insights into how the reproductive system contributes to women's overall health and lifespan.

The focus includes discovering what the main causes are of ovarian ageing and how these processes might be slowed down. This is important because ovarian health influences hormones that affect the entire body. As a result, this research can contribute to a better quality of life and a longer healthspan at an older age.

The initiative is unique because there is as yet no comparable facility anywhere in the world that focuses so specifically on reproductive ageing. This makes it easier for researchers from various disciplines to work together and thereby accelerates progress in this still novel research field.

For people who want to age healthily, it is important to know that the health of the female reproductive system plays a major role in overall ageing. This research may help to improve health and life expectancy at a later age in the future.
