This year’s annual ARDD conference on aging took place in Boston, close to several leading research centers. This created a practical and forward-thinking atmosphere with a strong focus on new treatments and technologies that can slow or improve aging. Topics ranged from calorie restriction to the use of artificial intelligence in drug development.
An important topic was the role of inflammation in the aging process, also known as inflammatory aging. Researchers discovered that a substance called taurine can inhibit inflammation in cells. In older people and animals, this substance decreases, causing inflammation to increase. New knowledge about these processes can lead to better methods for combating aging.
In addition, the drug tirzepatide was discussed; it is already being used for diabetes and obesity. Research suggests that the drug not only helps with weight loss, but may also lower the biological age of organs. This means that the drug may slow down the aging process and thus improve health at a later age.
Artificial intelligence is also playing an increasing role in the search for means to combat aging. Through smart computer programs, researchers can more quickly discover and test new medications. This speeds up the development of treatments that could be life-prolonging and health-enhancing.
These new insights and technologies offer hope for more effective ways to age healthily and remain vital for longer.
