Gum inflammation, also known as periodontitis, is common among older adults. This condition can lead to tooth loss and impaired oral health. Scientists have now investigated a renewed treatment method that uses stem cells from the tooth follicle to repair the gums. These are young cells that can grow into various tissues in the mouth.
A major problem with cell therapy is that the stem cells used age over time, which reduces their effectiveness. This process is called cellular senescence. Researchers discovered that reducing a specific protein called IGFBP5 accelerates this aging process. By increasing the production of IGFBP5 in stem cells, the aging of these cells is slowed down.
With this new approach, the researchers tested the treatment in experimental animals with gum inflammation. The results showed that stimulating IGFBP5 improves the function of the stem cells. As a result, the gum heals better and the bone around the teeth can remain intact. This offers hope for more effective treatments for people with gum problems.
These insights contribute to the development of advanced regenerative therapies. By limiting the aging of cells, treatments can be longer-lasting and more powerful. This research shows that it is possible to counteract age-related changes at the cellular level, which is important for healthy aging.
