Peroxisomes play important role in ageing

Scientists have discovered that the number of peroxisomes in our cells decreases as we grow older. Peroxisomes are tiny substructures within cells that perform various important tasks, such as breaking down fats and removing harmful substances. As a result, they contribute to a healthy metabolism and help cells to continue functioning properly.

With a lower number of peroxisomes, the ageing process accelerates slightly. Research involving worms showed that restoring the normal number of peroxisomes can extend lifespan. This occurred by inhibiting a protein called prx-11, which ensured a greater number of peroxisomes in the cells of these worms.

The researchers indicate that the influence of peroxisomes on life is mainly related to improving the functioning of mitochondria. Mitochondria are tiny energy factories within cells that are essential for our vitality. Better-functioning mitochondria allow the body to stay healthier and age more slowly.

These insights offer new starting points for better understanding the ageing process. By preventing peroxisome loss in the future, new methods may emerge to make ageing healthier and extend lifespan.

This research shows that protecting cell components is important for a vital life at an older age.
