New discovery regarding a brain protein and ageing

Scientists have discovered a brain protein that may play a major role in the body's ageing process. This protein, called menin, appears to be important in a part of the brain called the hypothalamus. Research in mice has shown that a decrease in menin leads to inflammation, memory problems and weaker bones.

The hypothalamus is a small region in the brain that regulates many processes in the body, such as the hormone system and energy balance. Loss of menin in this area therefore causes various symptoms that we often see in the elderly. Interestingly, restoring menin levels was able to partially reverse these ageing problems.

Additionally, the researchers discovered that a simple addition of the amino acid D-serine improved brain function. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, and D-serine plays a role in communication between brain cells. This supplement can therefore support memory and thinking.

These findings offer new hope for slowing down ageing processes. By focusing on menin and the use of D-serine, new ways may emerge to age healthily and fitly. This is an important step towards maintaining brain health as we grow older.
