In Florida lies The Villages, the world's largest residential area specifically for seniors. This community already has more than 150,000 residents and is set to continue growing significantly in the coming years with thousands of new homes. Scientist Galit Nimrod spent months there to research how people live there and what this way of living together means for older adults.
What stood out is the wide variety of residents. For example, not everyone has the same political or cultural outlook, although the community is predominantly white and fairly affluent. The residents are active in clubs and volunteering, and often remain involved in organising activities. This contributes to their wellbeing and sense of purpose in daily life.
At the same time, Nimrod noted a point of concern: the mutual tensions between political groups and the absence of younger generations within the neighbourhood. The latter means there is less interaction between young and old, something that can be particularly valuable for a society. However, residents do sometimes seek contact with younger people outside the neighbourhood.
The Villages serves as a model for what living and housing for older people might look like in the future. With a growing group of vital and active older people, more places will emerge where people can enjoy their free time together and support each other. This offers many opportunities for healthy and meaningful ageing.
