Optimal sleep duration slows down organ ageing

A recent study shows that both too little and too much sleep accelerates the body's ageing process. Scientists discovered a link between sleep duration and the biological clock of seventeen different organs, such as the heart, lungs and immune system. This means that the body ages faster when someone sleeps less than six hours or more than eight hours a night.

The study analysed data from half a million people and concluded that the best sleep duration for healthy ageing is between six and eight hours. Specifically, sleeping between about six and three-quarters and nearly eight hours appears to be most beneficial for the health of various organ systems. This period is referred to as the ‘longevity window’ because it is associated with a slowed-down ageing process.

Sleep plays a crucial role in regulating our body. During sleep, the body repairs itself and supports important functions that can slow down ageing. It is therefore important to be aware of your sleeping habits and, if necessary, make adjustments to stay within this healthy sleep limit.

Therefore, for people who want to stay healthy and grow old, it is valuable to maintain a consistent and balanced night's sleep. This is a relatively simple way to promote the health of the heart, lungs, immune system and other organs.
