The inside of our blood vessels, also known as the vascular endothelium, plays an important role in the health of our cardiovascular system. As we age, these cells can become damaged and function less effectively. This makes the vessels more vulnerable to various problems, such as atherosclerosis and high blood pressure.
Researchers have discovered that two factors contribute to the ageing process of the choroid. Firstly, the number of senescent cells increases. These cells are less active and can even release harmful substances. Secondly, the functioning of the mitochondria, the powerhouses of the cells, deteriorates. When mitochondria function less well, the cells age faster.
These two processes are interconnected. When the mitochondria no longer function properly, it accelerates the formation of senescent cells. This reduces the ability of the vascular wall to properly regulate blood vessels and can lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
This research highlights how important it is to support the health of our cells and their energy production. By encouraging healthy lifestyle habits, we can potentially slow down the ageing of our blood vessels and thereby remain vital for longer.
