Researchers have discovered that the substance K21, which is originally used as an antimicrobial treatment, can improve the function of mitochondria in certain immune cells. Mitochondria are the energy factories of our cells and play an important role in healthy functioning and the aging process. By improving mitochondrial function, cells can continue to function more efficiently.
K21 stimulates a process called mitophagy. This is a natural cleaning mechanism in cells that breaks down and removes damaged mitochondria. As a result, only healthy mitochondria remain, keeping energy production at its peak. This effect was especially observed in so-called macrophages, a type of immune cell that is also important in wound healing.
The positive effects of K21 were tested in roundworms, a commonly used model for studying aging. The worms lived longer and appeared to be better able to resist cellular deterioration without adverse side effects. This makes K21 a promising candidate for research into means that can slow down aging.
The research shows that improving mitochondrial health in immune cells offers a new perspective for promoting healthy lifespan. This could in the future contribute to treatments that help the body remain fit into old age.
